A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that firefighters responded at 3:38 p.m. to a call for medical aid at a home in the 200 block of Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood.
The spokesman added that the deceased are a 78-year-old male and a 68-year-old female, which match the ages of Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.Neither of the bodies have been publicly identified, but TMZ is reporting that the deceased are Reiner and his wife, based on information from law enforcement sources. TMZ is also reporting that “the two suffered lacerations consistent with a knife.”
The Los Angeles Police Department has opened up an investigation into the incident, with the Robbery Homicide Division taking the lead.
“On December 14th, at 3:40 pm, LAPD officers responded to a death investigation in the 200 block of S. Chadbourne Ave.,” the LAPD posted on X on Sunday night. “Inside the residence, officers discovered 2 decedents. The identity of the decedents has not yet been confirmed.”
The LAPD added: “Robbery Homicide Division (RHD) responded to the residence, which has been identified as the home of Rob Reiner. At this time, no further details are available as this is an ongoing RHD investigation, into an apparent homicide.”
At 8:47 p.m., Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass posted that it was indeed Reiner and his wife who were the deceased, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom also released a statement about 30 minutes later naming both Reiner and his wife. However, at a press conference shortly after, LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said that any identification of the deceased would come from the coroner’s office, and he declined to confirm anything about the deceased beyond their ages and genders.
Hamilton added that the LAPD has not identified a suspect at this time. Officers are waiting for a search warrant to obtain access to the residence. “Before we do anything, we have to get a search warrant,” he said.
Asked if the incident is being labeled a homicide, he responded: “At this time it’s a death investigation. Until we get inside, we can’t call it anything.”
Hamilton added that nobody has yet been detained in connection with the deaths.
