WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) -The Willie Stargell Foundation is once again stepping up to the plate when it comes to helping people with kidney failure.
The foundation presented a $128,000 check to Novant Health for the Willie “Pops” Stargell Dialysis Center in Wilmington.
It takes the total contribution to Novant to more than $1 million over the last 15 years.
“I’ve been able to see my grandkids whenever I want to and we travel whenever we want to. We would have never gotten any of that if it hadn’t worked out the way it did and this place had a lot to do with it,” Former Stargell Dialysis Center patient Mark Bizell said.
Stargell is the former Hall of Fame baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who lived in Wilmington for several years.
He passed away from kidney disease, and the dialysis unit that bears his name has helped save many lives since 2006.
