Islamabad: A Pakistani court has sentenced former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 17 years in prison each in the Toshakhana-II case.
The verdict was announced by Special Judge Central Arjumand Shah at Adiala Jail, where both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were present during the proceedings. None of their legal counsel appeared in court at the time the judgment was delivered.
According to the court ruling, both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were also sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment under Section 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code, related to criminal breach of trust. The combined sentences amount to a total of 17 years in prison for each of the convicts.
In addition to the prison terms, the court imposed a fine of one million rupees on each of them. Failure to pay the fine may result in further legal consequences.
The Toshakhana-II case pertains to allegations of misuse and illegal retention of state gifts received during Imran Khan’s tenure as prime minister. Legal experts say the verdict can be challenged in higher courts, and appeals are expected in the coming days.
The ruling marks another major development in the series of legal cases faced by the former prime minister, further intensifying Pakistan’s already volatile political landscape.
