LAHORE: Authorities in Lahore have seized 240 kilograms of meat sourced from dead goats and diseased buffaloes, and arrested suppliers involved in its distribution, officials said. Two cases have been registered against the accused.
On the orders of Director General Food Authority Asim Javed, food safety teams conducted operations at Bakra Mandi and Nawan Kot. During the raids, a person was caught red-handed in Nawan Kot while cutting the throat of a dead goat to make it appear freshly slaughtered. Unhygienic meat prepared in an illegal slaughterhouse, where meat was processed on the ground next to a bathroom, was also seized and destroyed.
A veterinary specialist inspected the sites on the spot, declaring the animals dead and the meat hazardous for human consumption. Investigators found poor sanitation, absence of mandatory records, and insect infestations at the slaughterhouse. Authorities said the contaminated meat was intended for sale, but timely intervention prevented its distribution.
The Price Control Commodities Management spokesperson said modern and simplified standard operating procedures (SOPs) have been introduced to improve meat quality, and continuous action is being taken against fraudulent practices.
He emphasized that the Punjab government will maintain zero tolerance for anyone endangering public health and will ensure strict enforcement of laws against health-threatening mafias.
