The National Grid Company of Pakistan (NGC) has successfully energised the 220kV Quaid-e-Azam Business Park Grid Station in Sheikhupura, marking a significant addition to the country’s power transmission infrastructure and a key step in supporting Special Economic Zone (SEZ)-driven industrial growth.
The strategically important grid station has been developed to meet the electricity needs of large-scale industrial consumers operating within the Quaid-e-Azam Business Park SEZ. The project, completed at a cost of over Rs4 billion, was financed by the federal government under the Cash Deposit Loan (CDL) facility and is aimed at ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted power supply for industrial operations.
NGC Managing Director Engr Altaf Hussain Malik congratulated the project team on the successful energisation, praising their technical expertise and professionalism. He said power infrastructure dedicated to SEZs plays a critical role in attracting investment, promoting industrial activity and generating employment.
“The Quaid-e-Azam Business Park Grid Station has been designed to support long-term industrial expansion and contribute to inclusive socio-economic development,” he said.
The newly commissioned facility has a transformation capacity of 500 MVA at the 220/132kV level and is supported by around four kilometres of 220kV transmission lines connected to the regional grid. This configuration is expected to enhance system stability, improve voltage profiles and provide the resilience needed to handle heavy industrial loads and future demand growth.
The grid station is the first to be commissioned specifically for a Special Economic Zone in Pakistan. It is also expected to reduce operational pressure on existing grid stations in Sheikhupura, Kala Shah Kaku, Bandala (Faisalabad) and surrounding industrial areas.
By strengthening supply reliability and reducing technical losses, the project is expected to lower industrial downtime, improve productivity and enhance cost efficiency for power consumers. Officials say the availability of robust power infrastructure will also encourage new investment, accelerate industrial expansion, support job creation and strengthen supply chains, contributing to broader economic development.
The project was executed under the leadership of Deputy Managing Director (Asset Development and Management) Engr Rashid A. Bhutto and General Manager (Project Delivery) North Engr Muhammad Shahid Nazir. The project team included Chief Engineer (Project Delivery) North Engr Asghar Mujtaba Khan, Project Director Engr Muhammad Usman Warraich, Executive Engineer Engr Ahmad Umar Dewan, and Sub-Divisional Engineers Rana Muhammad Zahid Hafeez and Sadaqat Ali, supported by their respective technical teams.
Last month, NGC also energised the 500kV Lahore North Grid Station, a major reinforcement of Punjab’s high-voltage transmission system. Officials said the back-to-back commissioning of large-scale projects underscores the company’s continued momentum in strengthening the national grid, enhancing system resilience and ensuring reliable power supply to support industrial growth and rising regional demand.
