GLAAD Media Awards: Heated Rivalry, I Love L.A., Stranger Things and The Hollywood Reporter Score Nominations

Nominees for the 37th annual GLAAD Media Awards have been unveiled, and yes, the queer hockey drama from Canada that became a pop culture sensation scored its first major nomination.

Jacob Tierney’s Heated Rivalry starring Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams netted a nom for outstanding new TV series alongside (recently canceled) Boots, Chad Powers, Clean Slate, The Four Seasons, The Hunting Wives, I Love L.A., Long Story Short, (recently canceled) Mid-Century Modern, Overcompensating and Pluribus. Following its meteoric rise in December, fans grew disgruntled online after it was reported that the show, made by Crave in Canada and acquired for distribution in the U.S. by HBO Max, would not be eligible for Emmy Awards.

Another show that dominated the cultural conversation in December, Stranger Things, which featured a buzz worthy coming out scene featuring Noah Schnapp’s Will, landed a best drama series nod alongside Brilliant Minds, The Buccaneers, Doctor Who, The Gilded Age, The Last of Us, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, The Sandman, Severance and Yellowjackets.

Nominated for outstanding film in wide theatrical release are Blue Moon, the Sydney Sweeney-starrer Christy, Clown in a Cornfield, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, The History of Sound starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor, the slasher redo I Know What You Did Last Summer, Kiss of the Spider Woman with Jennifer Lopez, On Swift Horses, Twinless and Andrew Ahn’s The Wedding Banquet.

There’s some star power in the roster for outstanding music artist, a list that includes Lady Gaga, Elton John and Brandi Carlile for the joint record, Maren Morris, Reneé Rapp, Conan Gray, Durand Bernarr, Ethel Cain, G Flip, Ty Herndon and Young Miko.

The Hollywood Reporter snagged a nomination again for outstanding magazine overall coverage in a list that also includes The Advocate, Cosmo, Gaye Magazine, Out, People, Poz, Rolling Stone, Time and Variety.

“The most popular series and media appear on this year’s list of nominees because LGBTQ stories are a winning strategy for a global audience who demands bold and original storytelling. As the media landscape shifts, gaming, local news, and podcasts have also emerged as proud homes to LGBTQ talent and narratives,” explained GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “In the face of rising anti-LGBTQ disinformation, GLAAD remains relentless in our mission to work across all forms of media and to tell the fair and accurate stories that protect values of family, fairness, and freedom for all.”

The organization singled out four projects for special recognition, an honor designed to spotlight entertainment or media that doesn’t fit “existing or traditional GLAAD Media Awards categories.” The four honorees: Andry José Hernández Romero, Before We Forget from Twenty Nine Palms Ent., The Drowsy Chaperone in Concert from Breaking the Binary Theatre and Gaydar with Anania.

The 37th GLAAD Media Awards, presented by official sponsor Hornitos Tequila, will take place in Los Angeles on March 5. Ellis executive produces alongside GLAAD’s Rich Ferraro and Anthony Allen Ramos with Jose Useche serving as producer. The show is produced in partnership with STAMP Event Co.
