JI Chief Announces Historic Sit-in Outside Sindh Assembly on Feb 14
Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has accused the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of holding Sindh hostage and called for an end to what he described as a “system of occupation” in the province.
Addressing the “Let Karachi Live March” organized by Jamaat-e-Islami on Shahrah-e-Faisal, Hafiz Naeem said the people want to see Karachi progress, but continued neglect by successive rulers has pushed the city into crisis.
Referring to the Gul Plaza incident, he said no one came forward to take responsibility. He criticized President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for not visiting the site despite being in Karachi, and also questioned Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for not visiting the city to console the affected people.
The JI chief said the ruling elite has deprived citizens of their fundamental rights and reiterated his party’s demand for an empowered local government system.
He rejected the idea of placing Karachi under federal control, stating that it would not solve the city’s problems. He added that the Circular Railway had been destroyed and the city lacks a comprehensive master plan.
Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman announced that Jamaat-e-Islami would stage a historic sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly on February 14, vowing that the protest would continue until authority is restored to the people.
