Spain’s world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz etched his name into tennis history on Sunday by winning his first Australian Open title, defeating defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an electrifying final at Rod Laver Arena.
At just 22 years of age, Alcaraz has become the youngest man in history to complete the Career Grand Slam, joining an elite club of only six players who have won all four majors at least once:
Rod Laver
Andre Agassi
Roger Federer
Rafael Nadal
Novak Djokovic
Carlos Alcaraz
With this victory, Alcaraz now has four Grand Slam titles:
US Open 2022
Wimbledon 2023
French Open 2024
Australian Open 2026
Djokovic, aged 38, started strongly and levelled the match after dropping the first set, but Alcaraz regained control and showed remarkable composure to close out the match in four sets.
Alcaraz becomes the youngest player ever to achieve the Career Grand Slam, surpassing the previous record held by Laver (achieved at 24).
Djokovic, who was chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title and an 11th Australian Open crown, paid tribute to his opponent:
“He was simply the better player today. He is not the future — he is the present.”
Alcaraz, emotional after the win, said:
“Playing Novak is always a dream. To beat him here, in this stadium, to win this title… this is the greatest moment of my life.”
Tennis fans and experts now widely regard Alcaraz as the new king of the sport, with many predicting multiple more Grand Slam titles in the years ahead.
