Immediate Release Ordered for All Persons Detained Under Maintenance of Public Order Act – Official Notification Issued
Karachi, February 10, 2026 – In a significant and unexpected decision, the Government of Sindh has announced the complete revocation of all detention orders issued under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960.
According to an official notification issued by the Sindh Home Department, all MPO detention orders and restrictions currently in force have been immediately cancelled. The notification directs all relevant authorities to ensure the prompt release of every individual held under MPO provisions.
The notification states that the decision has been taken in light of constitutional requirements, protection of fundamental human rights, and compliance with judicial directives. All concerned officials have been instructed to implement the order without delay.
The move has sparked widespread discussion in political and civil society circles in Sindh. Many have welcomed it as a positive step toward upholding civil liberties, while some observers have raised questions regarding its implications for law and order and public security.
A spokesperson for the Sindh Home Department clarified that the decision was made after deliberation by the provincial cabinet and thorough legal review, with the aim of eliminating unnecessary preventive detentions and strengthening the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights.
