World Desk — The holy month of Ramadan has commenced across the globe, with the majority of Muslim-majority nations beginning their fast on February 19, while two countries — Fiji and New Zealand — will observe their first fast a day later on February 20.
Pakistan, India, Oman, Brunei, and Egypt are among the nations where the crescent moon was sighted on the evening of February 18, prompting the official announcement of Ramadan’s commencement on February 19.
Fiji and New Zealand, however, will begin Ramadan on February 20 due to their geographical location in the Pacific region, where moon sighting timings differ from the rest of the world. The International Date Line and the countries’ eastward position mean that the crescent moon becomes visible slightly later compared to nations in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
The variation in Ramadan start dates is a well-established phenomenon within the global Muslim community, arising from differences in moon sighting methodology — some countries rely on physical sighting while others follow astronomical calculations.
Muslims around the world are extending warm greetings as the blessed month begins. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is marked by fasting from dawn to dusk, intensified prayers, recitation of the Holy Quran, and acts of charity.
Ramadan Mubarak to all!
