New York/Washington — A powerful blizzard is battering the northeastern United States, placing over 40 million Americans under blizzard warnings as one of the most severe winter storms in recent memory sweeps through the region.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani banned most travel across the nation’s largest city from 9 p.m. Sunday through noon Monday , declaring a citywide state of emergency. The city is expecting between 13 to 17 inches of snow, with some southern neighborhoods potentially seeing up to 24 inches — levels that could surpass January’s major snowstorm.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill also declared a state of emergency in preparation for the storm. Blizzard warnings are in effect for New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, and coastal Connecticut, with parts of New Jersey expected to see 20 to 30 inches of snowfall.
Major airports across the Northeast have been severely disrupted, with 82% of Monday’s flights canceled at JFK, 91% at LaGuardia, and 86% at Boston Logan. In total, over 14,000 US flights have been affected.
Mayor Mamdani also canceled classes for the city’s public schools on Monday with no remote learning — the city’s first traditional snow day since 2019. Officials are urging residents to stay indoors and are deploying over 2,000 snowplows and warming centers across all five boroughs.
