Lahore — Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Thursday officially launched the E-Taxi Scheme at a ceremony in Lahore, making several key announcements aimed at promoting green transportation and women’s economic empowerment across the province.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, CM Maryam Nawaz said that the E-Taxi Scheme is an eco-friendly initiative that will play a pivotal role in reducing environmental pollution while creating meaningful employment opportunities for women. She emphasized that the scheme aligns with the government’s broader vision of making women financially independent and self-sufficient.
In a major announcement, the Chief Minister stated that the Punjab government will pay 60 percent of the down payment for women drivers who wish to avail the scheme, significantly lowering the financial barrier for women to enter the transport sector. The initiative is expected to encourage a greater number of women to take up driving as a profession and contribute to the provincial economy.
The E-Taxi Scheme, based on electric vehicles, is part of Punjab’s wider push toward sustainable development and clean energy solutions. Officials believe the initiative will not only reduce carbon emissions but also help modernize the public transport network across major cities of the province.
Civil society and economic analysts have welcomed the scheme as a positive step toward gender-inclusive economic growth, while stressing that its long-term success will depend on transparent implementation, after-sales support, and accessibility of charging infrastructure across the region.
