Islamabad, Pakistan – Amid global energy fluctuations, petroleum product prices in South Asia have reached their highest levels in Pakistan, according to recent data from the Ministry of Petroleum. This surge is exacerbating economic pressures on consumers and businesses alike in the country.
Sources from the Ministry of Petroleum in Islamabad revealed that the current price of petrol in Pakistan stands at an equivalent of 1.15 USD per liter. This marks a significant increase following a recent hike of 55 rupees per liter for both petrol and diesel on March 6, 2026, which has pushed costs well above regional averages.
In comparison, neighboring India reports a petrol price of 1.03 USD per liter, while Sri Lanka’s rate is 94 cents per liter, and Bangladesh stands at 95 cents per liter. These figures highlight Pakistan’s position as the most expensive in the region for fuel, potentially impacting inflation, transportation costs, and overall economic growth.
Experts attribute the disparity to a combination of factors, including heavy taxation, currency devaluation, and reliance on imported oil amid volatile international markets. The Pakistani government has defended the price adjustments as necessary to align with global crude oil trends and to reduce subsidies that strain the national budget.
Public reaction has been swift, with protests reported in major cities like Karachi and Lahore, where citizens decry the burden on daily commuters and low-income households. Opposition parties have called for immediate relief measures, such as tax reductions or targeted subsidies for vulnerable groups.
The Ministry of Petroleum has assured that efforts are underway to stabilize prices through negotiations with oil suppliers and exploring alternative energy sources. However, with ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting oil supplies, short-term relief appears uncertain.
This development comes at a time when South Asian economies are grappling with post-pandemic recovery and climate-related challenges, underscoring the need for regional cooperation on energy security.
