Tehran / Washington
Iranian state media has announced that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been nominated as Iran’s new Supreme Leader. The Assembly of Experts has called on the Iranian nation to maintain unity and pledge allegiance to the new leadership.
The 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei has never held a public office or stood for election, yet he has long been considered one of the most influential figures within the Supreme Leader’s inner circle, with deep reported ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Following the announcement, large crowds took to the streets across Iran in celebration.
However, the development has drawn sharp reactions from Washington and Tel Aviv. US President Donald Trump had previously warned that any new Iranian Supreme Leader would require American approval, stating he would “not last long” without it. Israel similarly warned that the new Supreme Leader could become a target.
The Assembly of Experts urged the Iranian people to stand united, calling national cohesion essential in the current circumstances.
The announcement is expected to send shockwaves through an already volatile Middle East, with regional and global powers closely watching Iran’s next moves.
