LAHORE: Public education systems shape the social and economic future of nations. When government schools lose credibility, inequality deepens and social mobility declines. Conversely, when these institutions regain strength, opportunities expand and public trust is restored. In Punjab, a significant recalibration of educational governance is now underway—one that is redefining public schooling and reshaping parental perceptions.
For decades, public schools in the province struggled with image challenges, often perceived as inferior to private institutions in terms of infrastructure, discipline, and academic performance. As a result, many families—despite financial constraints—opted for private education. Today, however, this narrative is undergoing a visible shift. Selected public schools are witnessing a surge in enrollment demand, with waiting lists emerging—clear evidence of renewed confidence in the system.
At the heart of this transformation is the Nawaz Sharif Schools of Eminence initiative, introduced under the leadership of Maryam Nawaz. This initiative goes beyond cosmetic upgrades, representing a comprehensive structural reform focused on governance, pedagogy, infrastructure, and accountability.
The Schools of Eminence model is anchored in the principle that sustainable development depends on equitable access to quality education. By elevating public schools to the standards of leading private institutions—while maintaining free access—the initiative aims to bridge socio-economic disparities.
A field visit by Daily The Business to a School of Eminence provided insight into the project’s scope and vision. School administration highlighted its modern infrastructure, advanced academic framework, and its broader role in redefining education standards across Punjab.
The reforms extend well beyond physical improvements. Campuses are being equipped with modern science and computer labs, robotics facilities, Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) classrooms, digital learning systems, and sports complexes. This holistic approach reflects a progressive educational philosophy combining academic excellence with technological and co-curricular development.
A key partner in this reform is the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF), which has introduced transparent governance systems and performance-based monitoring. Teacher training aligned with modern pedagogical standards, continuous assessment, and measurable learning outcomes form the backbone of this quality assurance framework.
The flagship campus, established in Jalalpur Pirwala (Multan) under the supervision of Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, spans over 400 kanals. Serving more than 2,100 students, it stands as one of the largest and most advanced public-sector educational institutions in the region.
Launched on May 5, 2025, through a Memorandum of Understanding between Commissioner Multan Amir Karim Khan and PEF Managing Director Shahid Farid, the project operates under a public-private partnership model. It combines private-sector efficiency with public-sector accessibility and oversight.
Inside classrooms, the focus has shifted to experiential learning. Students actively participate in STEAM-based projects, robotics competitions, digital literacy programs, arts initiatives, and sports activities—developing critical thinking, collaboration, and leadership skills essential for a modern economy.
Digital integration remains a cornerstone of the initiative. By embedding technology into the core curriculum, the Schools of Eminence are addressing the urban-rural digital divide and preparing students for future workforce demands.
Equally important is the emphasis on accountability. Continuous monitoring of teacher performance, student outcomes, and institutional efficiency ensures sustained quality improvements. Regular professional development programs further enhance teaching standards.
The Jalalpur Pirwala campus marks the beginning of a province-wide rollout. The Government of Punjab plans to expand this model across districts, inviting collaboration from credible private-sector partners and education professionals.
The Nawaz Sharif Schools of Eminence represent more than just upgraded institutions—they signal a fundamental shift in public education strategy. By combining free access, modern infrastructure, trained faculty, digital innovation, and transparent governance, Punjab is redefining what public schooling can achieve.
If sustained with consistency and institutional integrity, this initiative has the potential to transform the trajectory of education in the province. More importantly, it reinforces the principle that quality education is a fundamental right—not a privilege determined by income.
