In a development with far-reaching consequences for international security, Iran has begun formal deliberations on withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iranian state media reported on Saturday.
According to Iranian media sources, the move is primarily aimed at preventing what Tehran describes as espionage activities carried out by American and Israeli agents operating under the cover of IAEA inspectors. Iran’s parliament and all relevant state institutions are actively reviewing the option of a full withdrawal from the landmark treaty.
Iranian officials have stated bluntly that “there is no longer any justification for Iran to remain within the NPT framework.”
Tehran’s frustration centers on what it sees as a fundamental breach of the treaty’s obligations. Under the NPT, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is required to ensure that member states like Iran receive access to peaceful nuclear technology and equipment. However, Iranian authorities point out that despite ongoing US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear power facilities, the IAEA has conspicuously failed to issue even a formal condemnation of these attacks.
Iran argues that an international body that remains silent in the face of military strikes on civilian nuclear infrastructure has effectively abandoned its mandate — rendering continued Iranian membership both pointless and potentially dangerous.
A formal NPT withdrawal by Iran would send seismic shockwaves through global non-proliferation diplomacy, potentially opening the door to accelerated nuclear development and triggering a new and unpredictable phase in the Middle East crisis.
The international community, including permanent members of the UN Security Council, has yet to issue an official response to Iran’s announcement.
