U.S. President Donald Trump has issued his most direct ultimatum yet to Iran, declaring that Tehran has just 48 hours to either reach a nuclear agreement or open the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping — or face what he described as devastating consequences.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated: “Remember when I gave Iran 10 days to make a deal or open the Strait of Hormuz — that time is almost up. 48 hours remain.”
The warning comes amid heightened tensions after the confirmed loss of a U.S. F-16 fighter jet during ongoing operations in the region. Despite the incident, Trump insisted diplomatic channels remain open. “This is war and we are at war,” he said, adding that the loss of the aircraft would not derail negotiations.
When pressed on the fate of the missing crew member, Trump said he was not yet in a position to comment on what action the U.S. might take if the individual had been harmed.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically critical waterways, with approximately 20% of global oil supply passing through it daily. Analysts warn that any disruption to shipping in the strait could trigger an immediate and severe spike in global energy prices.
Iran has yet to issue an official response. The international community has called for de-escalation, with several world powers urging both sides to return to the negotiating table before the deadline expires.
