Guwahati/Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ignited a major political and communal controversy with strong remarks made during an election rally in poll-bound Assam.
Addressing a gathering, the BJP leader declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can “cleanse” Assam of “Muslim infiltrators,” stating that every Muslim in the region will be identified and removed. He claimed that only the BJP-led NDA government has the capability to address infiltration, “love jihad,” and “land jihad” while protecting Assam’s cultural identity and demographic balance.
In the same address, Yogi Adityanath announced strict measures for Uttar Pradesh, saying that no one will be allowed to offer prayers (namaz) on public roads anymore. He further stated that no place of worship will be permitted to amplify loud voices or use loudspeakers in a way that disturbs public peace.
“Roads are meant for traffic and movement, not for religious gatherings,” he remarked, urging people to learn “religious discipline” from the orderly conduct witnessed during the Maha Kumbh.
The statements have drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and minority groups, who have termed them inflammatory and accused the BJP of using anti-Muslim rhetoric for electoral gains ahead of Assam assembly polls. Critics argue that such remarks raise serious concerns over religious harmony, minority rights, and the secular fabric of India.
Yogi Adityanath’s government has previously enforced restrictions on loudspeakers at religious places (both mosques and temples) and acted against street prayers in Uttar Pradesh, citing public order and Supreme Court guidelines on noise pollution. Supporters of the Chief Minister view these steps as necessary for maintaining law and order without discrimination.
The remarks have sparked intense debate on social media and in political circles, with demands for clarification or action against the UP CM. The Election Commission and civil society organizations are closely watching the situation.
This development comes as Assam heads toward elections, where issues of infiltration and identity remain highly sensitive.
