Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday spoke with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian over the telephone for approximately 45 minutes. The Prime Minister conveyed deep appreciation for the Iranian leadership’s wisdom and foresight in accepting the ceasefire proposal and agreeing to Pakistan’s offer to host direct negotiations between Iran and the United States in Islamabad later this week.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Sharif congratulated President Pezeshkian on the ceasefire agreement and also conveyed his respects to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. He praised Iran’s “sagacity” in choosing the path of dialogue and de-escalation.
President Pezeshkian confirmed that Iran will participate in the upcoming peace talks in Islamabad. Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the current ceasefire and discussed efforts to restore lasting peace in the region. The Iranian President thanked Pakistan for its mediation efforts and extended best wishes to the people of Pakistan.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated:
“I had a warm and substantive conversation with President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran this afternoon. I conveyed my deep appreciation for the wisdom and sagacity of the Iranian leadership in agreeing to the ceasefire and for accepting Pakistan’s offer to host negotiations between Iran and the U.S. in Islamabad later this week to work jointly for the return of peace to the region.”
This telephonic contact comes shortly after Pakistan successfully mediated a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which took effect immediately. Pakistan has invited delegations from both countries to Islamabad for high-level talks aimed at achieving a comprehensive and lasting agreement to resolve all outstanding disputes.
The development is being seen as a significant diplomatic success for Pakistan and a positive step towards reducing tensions in the Middle East through dialogue and peaceful means.
