New York: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the announced 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, describing it as a positive step toward reducing tensions in the region.
In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Guterres commended the United States for its role in facilitating the ceasefire. He expressed hope that the temporary halt in hostilities would end immediate suffering on both sides of the Blue Line and pave the way for meaningful negotiations.
The UN chief further stated that he hopes this ceasefire will contribute to the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006), leading to a long-term solution to the conflict.
Guterres urged all actors to fully respect the ceasefire and to comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, at all times. He emphasized that the United Nations remains ready to support efforts toward a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region.
The 10-day cessation of hostilities took effect on April 16, 2026, following an announcement by US President Donald Trump.
