On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, we pay rich tribute to the struggle, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment of journalists who continue to play a pivotal role in shaping informed, aware, and civilized societies.
Press freedom is not merely about reporting news; it is the foundation of democracy, the guarantee of citizens’ right to information, and one of the most effective tools for ensuring transparency in the state system. A free press strengthens truth, promotes accountability, and guides society in the right direction.
Responsible media serves as a key pillar of national stability, unity, and public awareness. A media grounded in facts, neutrality, and public interest not only highlights issues but also provides intellectual groundwork for their solutions. In contrast, restrictions on journalism or its subjugation to vested interests lead to unrest, confusion, and misinformation in society.
Free, independent, and truth-driven journalism is the hallmark of a healthy society. It is the force that raises voice against injustice, supports the weak, and holds the powerful accountable. History bears witness that journalists who stood for truth always faced pressure, hardships, and even sacrificed their lives—but their courage never faded.
Those who laid down their lives for truth are a source of pride for the nation. Their sacrifices not only shake our conscience but also remind us that the path of truth is never easy, yet it is the same path that elevates nations. Today, we pay tribute to all journalists who embraced martyrdom in the pursuit of truth and integrity. Their sacrifices will never go in vain.
The pen of a journalist is the most powerful weapon in the struggle for democracy, justice, and truth. It can bring change without bloodshed, illuminate darkness, and give voice to the voiceless. However, this power is effective only when journalists are provided freedom, protection, and impartiality.
On this important occasion, it is imperative that the government, state institutions, and society jointly ensure the protection of journalists. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right of any democratic society, and safeguarding it is a collective responsibility. The challenges, threats, and insecurity faced by journalists must be addressed on priority so that they can perform their duties without fear.
I salute all journalists who, despite pressure, difficulties, and risks, remain steadfast in their commitment to truth. They are the true heroes of society who continue to spread light through their pen, preserve truth, and lay the foundation for a better, more just, and more aware future generation.
Let us all reaffirm our commitment to protect press freedom, stand with truth, and continue striving for a society where justice, truth, and integrity prevail. This is the guarantee of a strong and prosperous Pakistan.
Long Live Pakistan.
