WASHINGTON / TEHRAN — The United States Navy has attacked an Iranian commercial cargo ship in the strategic waters of the Strait of Hormuz and the Sea of Oman, triggering a massive fire onboard. The incident has left 10 crew members wounded and 5 others missing, as search and rescue operations continue in the area.
The vessel was targeted in one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints through which approximately 20% of global oil supplies transit daily. The attack caused a large blaze aboard the ship, leaving the crew in a state of emergency.
Iran has condemned the strike in the strongest possible terms, calling it “an act of open aggression” against a civilian commercial vessel operating in full compliance with international maritime law. Tehran has announced it will formally lodge protests with international bodies including the United Nations.
The incident marks a dangerous escalation in US-Iran tensions and raises serious concerns over the security of global shipping lanes. Energy markets are expected to react sharply, with crude oil prices likely to surge in response to the heightened threat in the Persian Gulf region.
