Tehran — Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei confirmed on Saturday that negotiations brokered by Pakistan between Tehran and Washington are actively progressing toward finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), though significant hurdles remain.
Speaking to Reuters, Baghaei offered a cautiously measured assessment of the diplomatic process. “We are both far from and close to a deal,” he said, adding that the talks are being complicated by Washington’s shifting positions. “American officials keep changing their stance repeatedly,” he warned.
On the sensitive issue of the Strait of Hormuz — through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes — the Iranian spokesman drew a clear red line. Any framework or mechanism governing the strategic waterway must be agreed upon exclusively by Iran, Oman, and neighboring littoral states, Baghaei insisted, firmly rejecting any American role in determining its status.
Pakistan has emerged as a key diplomatic intermediary in the ongoing Iran-US dialogue, with Islamabad’s mediation accepted by both sides amid broader regional tensions.
The talks come against a backdrop of years of diplomatic estrangement between Tehran and Washington, and any agreement — even a preliminary MOU — would represent a significant diplomatic development with far-reaching implications for regional security and global energy markets.
