New Delhi
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that negotiations with Iran have entered a decisive phase, expressing strong optimism that Tehran could accept a deal to end hostilities as early as today.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of his official visit to India in New Delhi, Rubio said diplomatic efforts were bearing fruit and that he was hopeful an announcement could be made “today, tomorrow, or within the next few days.”
“Things are moving quickly toward a resolution,” Rubio said, adding that he was looking forward to sharing good news with the world very soon.
The statement comes hours after Russia’s envoy to Geneva, Mikhail Ulyanov, publicly challenged Washington’s characterisation of the talks, saying Iran’s account of the negotiations was closer to reality and that American messaging at this stage appeared less than responsible — a rare and pointed diplomatic rebuke that underscored the fragility of the process.
The duelling narratives from Moscow and Washington have drawn attention from international observers, who note that the gap between the two sides’ public accounts may itself be a sign of how sensitive the final stages of negotiation remain.
If a deal is reached, it would mark a significant turning point in one of the most consequential diplomatic standoffs of recent years, with implications for regional security, global energy markets, and the future of Iran’s nuclear programme.
