The United States Embassy in Islamabad hosted its largest-ever Independence Day reception Wednesday evening, marking America’s 250th anniversary with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as chief guest.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker delivered a wide-ranging address celebrating the transformation of U.S.-Pakistan relations under President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Sharif, calling the bilateral partnership “stronger than ever and grounded in true friendship.”
Historic Diplomacy on Pakistani Soil
Baker highlighted Islamabad’s pivotal role in hosting landmark U.S.-Iran nuclear talks in April — the highest-level direct contact between Washington and Tehran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The 21-hour negotiating session required Pakistan to deploy over 10,000 security personnel and, in Baker’s words, represented “Pakistan’s finest hour of modern history.”
“Pakistan — by having good ties with both Tehran and Washington — was uniquely positioned to bring two adversaries together,” she said.
Baker also praised Pakistan’s leadership for brokering the May 2025 India-Pakistan ceasefire, noting that President Trump personally credited Prime Minister Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir for “preventing war between nuclear-armed neighbors.”
White House Meeting and High-Level Ties
The envoy referenced a September Oval Office meeting between President Trump, Prime Minister Sharif, and Field Marshal Munir as evidence of deepening personal bonds at the highest levels of government. She described both Pakistani leaders as “two of our most trusted partners in the region and globally.”
Sports Diplomacy and the World Cup
Baker noted Pakistan’s central role in America’s “Decade of Sport,” pointing out that Pakistani-manufactured footballs will be used in the FIFA World Cup 2026, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. She said the embassy held the world’s first FIFA 2026 countdown event in partnership with the Pakistan Football Federation.
