A 27-year-old teacher, Maysum Abdullah, who was injured while trying to protect students during a knife attack at Co-op Academy Manchester, is being hailed as a hero by the public, parents, and fellow teachers.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 9, leaving two 14-year-old students and one teacher injured. All three were rushed to hospital and later discharged after treatment. Abdullah, now recovering at home, said he is still trying to process the incident and cope with its impact. Reports indicate he intervened to keep students safe, sustaining injuries to his neck and hands in the process.
His wife, Saima Abdullah, said: “My husband chose teaching to make a positive difference in young people’s lives, and he truly proved to be a hero in protecting and caring for these children. Our prayers are with the two injured students and with all the students and staff who witnessed this traumatic event.”
According to police, the attack took place on school grounds in the Blakely area of Manchester, after which the school was placed in lockdown. A 14-year-old girl has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of possessing a bladed weapon on school premises. She is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. Police are not currently treating the incident as terrorism, and investigations are ongoing.
