A powerful explosion rocked the Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) complex in Qatar on Monday, killing 13 workers and injuring 66 others, Qatar’s Ministry of Energy confirmed. The victims include nationals from Pakistan and India.
Qatar’s Minister of Energy, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, addressed reporters in an emotional statement: “Today I have to make an announcement I had hoped I would never have to make — 13 of our people have lost their lives.”
The blast occurred as technicians were working to restore operations at facilities that had been shut down following an Iranian military strike in March. Despite the severity of the incident, officials stated that the complex’s export capacity remains unaffected and that no environmental hazard has been detected.
Ras Laffan is one of the world’s largest LNG production hubs, supplying energy to markets across Europe and Asia. Investigations into the cause of the explosion are underway.
The families of the deceased are being notified, and the injured continue to receive medical treatment at local hospitals.
