An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad has sentenced Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Muhammad Jawad Tariq to one month in prison and imposed a fine of PKR 100,000 for repeatedly defying court orders.
ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra handed down the sentence verbally, expressing strong displeasure over the conduct of the city’s senior police official. The case stems from a First Information Report (FIR) registered at Margalla Police Station in connection with protests involving Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders on October 4, 2024. Despite multiple summons issued by the court, police failed to submit the investigation challan, and DIG Jawad Tariq did not appear before the court in person.
The detailed written order is expected to be issued at a later stage. According to sources, DIG Jawad Tariq is set to challenge the verdict before the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The development comes against the backdrop of earlier IHC rulings in which DC Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon was sentenced to six months and former SSP Malik Jamil Zafar to four months in prison — along with fines of PKR 100,000 each — in a case concerning the detention of PTI leader Shahryar Afridi under the MPO 3. Those sentences were, however, subsequently overturned by the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court.
