OCCUPIED EAST JERUSALEM — Illegal Israeli settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound under Israeli police protection on Wednesday and performed Talmudic rituals inside its grounds.
According to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, dozens of settlers entered the compound, toured its courtyard, and carried out religious rites under the supervision of Israeli police. WAFA cited the Jerusalem Governorate as the source of the report.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in Islam. Jews refer to the site as the “Temple Mount,” claiming it was once home to two ancient Jewish temples.
Palestinians say Israel is working to entrench its control over occupied East Jerusalem, including Al-Aqsa, and erase its Arab and Islamic identity. Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, a position grounded in UN resolutions that do not recognize Israel’s 1967 occupation of the city or its 1980 annexation.
Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has previously entered Al-Aqsa with hundreds of supporters and has repeatedly advocated for allowing Jews to perform religious rituals at the site. Israeli authorities have also imposed multiple restrictions — including age limits — on Muslim access to Al-Aqsa Mosque.
