During the ongoing funeral proceedings for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran, a small coffin placed beside his own — belonging to his 14-month-old granddaughter, Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani — became the focal point of global attention. Zahra was killed alongside other family members in a joint US-Israeli strike. Images and videos of the scene went viral rapidly on social media, with many users expressing grief and outrage over the death of an infant, even as millions in Iran attended the funeral chanting slogans of mourning and vengeance.
Zahra’s tiny coffin, placed next to Khamenei’s flag-draped casket, became the most talked-about image of the funeral ceremony. It is worth recalling that Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 in US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which also claimed the lives of several members of his family.
At the funeral held at Tehran’s Grand Musalla, Khamenei’s black turban rested atop his coffin, while caskets of other family members were also present. According to officials, the funeral rites will continue for six days, during which the body will be transported to Tehran, Qom, the holy Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala, and finally to Mashhad, where burial will take place.
Mourners at the ceremony held red banners, regarded in Iran as symbols of vengeance, and chanted slogans of “Death to America” and “Revenge.” A 27-year-old mourner told the Associated Press: “I came here to bid farewell to my beloved leader, Ali Khamenei. I never expected to see such a day. I wish I had died before this tragedy.”
