MIRPUR, Azad Kashmir — Polling for the first phase of the 2026 Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections has concluded, with vote counting now underway. Polling had been scheduled to end at 5 p.m. but was extended by an hour amid heavy turnout.
Voters in 13 constituencies across the three districts of Mirpur division — Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber — cast ballots to choose their representatives, with polling running from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Authorities had deployed special security arrangements to maintain law and order during the process.
However, clashes broke out between workers of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the Nakyal constituency during polling. PPP worker Mukhtar Younas was killed and three others were injured in the violence. Tensions remain high in the area following the incident, and authorities are investigating.
