BUENOS AIRES — A leaked police dossier has revealed serious threats faced by Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and other players during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to Spanish newspaper Información, Messi received at least two serious threats — one from a man who called from Dallas airport claiming to be entering the stadium with a grenade and rifle, and another via social media threatening to blow him up with four bombs strapped to his body. A separate bomb scare involving trash bins at the stadium triggered a full security sweep, though nothing was found.
Ronaldo also faced security concerns after a suspect reportedly sought information about his accommodation, and a fan managed to enter his hotel and follow him into an elevator. Referee François Letexier received over 6,000 threatening WhatsApp messages, while players including Alexander Sørloth, Jhon Jáder Durán (Kaimenlon Campaz) and Kylian Mbappé also faced online abuse and threats. The dossier lists these as alleged threats and security scares — none were confirmed as completed attacks.
