Canada Announces Retaliatory Tariffs Against U.S., Trade War Escalates

OTTAWA: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced retaliatory tariffs against the United States, after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Speaking to reporters in Ottawa on Saturday, Carney said the new Canadian tariffs will target American steel, dairy, electronics and other industries, taking effect on September 8. “Canada will match Washington’s new tariffs dollar for dollar to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses,” he said.
The announcement came after days of intense negotiations collapsed on Friday, further straining relations between the two longstanding trading partners. U.S. President Donald Trump’s new tariffs cover wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing and sports equipment, amounting to roughly $20 billion — about 5.5% of Canada’s exports to the U.S.
Reacting on Truth Social, Trump said Canada “wants the benefits of statehood without being a state,” claiming Canada had long charged American farmers “hefty” tariffs, adding: “Enough is enough.”
Carney said Canada will also target U.S. steel, dairy, farm equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, with further details expected in the coming days. He added that Canada will announce support measures next week for industries hit by the new U.S. tariffs — measures that could continue for years. A recent poll found 56% of Canadians support a hardline stance and no further concessions. Meanwhile, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said there are currently no plans for fresh talks with Canada.
