Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said no Islamic country should allow its territory to be used as a launchpad for aggression against another Islamic nation, stressing that defending Iran does not mean hostility toward neighboring or Muslim countries.
Speaking in a televised address broadcast on Iranian state TV during the 40th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran, Pezeshkian said no Islamic country should seek its own security through the insecurity of its neighbors.
Referring to the conflict with the United States, Pezeshkian said that while diplomatic efforts were underway to resolve differences between Tehran and Washington, the US and Israel launched large-scale military attacks on Iran. He said the strikes killed Iranian commanders, officials, scientists, students, schoolchildren and civilians, and targeted cities and infrastructure, even as Iran-US talks had resumed that same month in pursuit of a diplomatic solution.
According to Iran’s official IRNA news agency, around 600 domestic and international guests from 40 countries — including Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, Lebanon and Afghanistan — are attending the conference, which runs through Sunday with sessions in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad, plus four special sessions in West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Golestan and Razavi Khorasan provinces.
The president’s remarks come against the backdrop of recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which were reportedly launched from American military bases in other regional Islamic countries — strikes to which Iran responded by targeting US bases in those same countries.
