Tehran/Vienna, September 15, 2026: Iran has strongly protested after its nuclear chief, Mohammad Eslami, was barred from attending the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna. Iran’s ambassador Reza Najafi said Eslami was blocked from the meeting following US pressure, calling it a “clear violation” of Iran’s rights as a member state.
Najafi said the move violates the principle of sovereign equality enshrined in the IAEA’s statute and undermines Iran’s right to be represented by a delegate of its choosing. He also accused Austria, as host country, of failing to meet its obligations under the IAEA headquarters agreement to facilitate entry and issue visas for accredited delegates promptly. He called for immediate corrective action, describing the exclusion as a “clear abuse of authority” with “no legal basis.”
The IAEA General Conference opened in Vienna on Monday and is set to conclude on Friday.
