Occupied West Bank: More than 100 Palestinian teachers were unable to reach their schools in the northern West Bank on Sunday after the Israeli army closed two checkpoints.
Azmi Balawneh, education director for the Tubas governorate, told the Palestinian news agency WAFA that 104 teachers could not get to work after the army shut the Tayasir and Ain Shibli checkpoints in the northern Jordan Valley. The closures disrupted classes at six schools and one kindergarten with roughly 1,100 students. The army closed the checkpoints as part of wider military restrictions across the occupied West Bank.
Separately, Israeli forces raided the village of al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah, in the early hours of Sunday, local sources told Turkey’s Anadolu Agency. The operation involved infantry units, military vehicles and a drone. Troops deployed in the village’s neighborhoods, searched Palestinian homes, closed the main entrance and detained dozens of Palestinians. Sources said the closure also kept students from getting to school and prevented workers and employees from reaching their jobs.
Al-Mughayyir has faced repeated Israeli raids and attacks amid rising settler violence in the area. Since Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip began in October 2023, attacks by the Israeli army and settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have intensified.
