Moscow: Ukraine launched its largest drone attack on the Russian capital to date on Sunday. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the assault was a failed attempt to disrupt voting on the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections. President Vladimir Putin has described the vote as a test of public support for Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Local officials said two people were killed in the area around Moscow, while the capital’s oil refinery, which has been hit before, was also targeted. Witnesses reported hearing explosions in Moscow and seeing plumes of smoke rising from the refinery site. It was not immediately clear how much damage the facility sustained. Ukraine did not immediately comment.
In a statement on Telegram, Sobyanin said the largest drone attack by the enemy had been repelled. He said more than 1,600 drones had been shot down across all fronts since the previous day, including 450 headed toward Moscow. One drone struck a residential building, but none of its residents were killed. Sobyanin said the attack was clearly aimed at disrupting the elections, and that the enemy had not succeeded.
The State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, is being elected for the first time since Russia launched its full-scale war on Ukraine in February 2022. The ruling United Russia party is expected to retain its political dominance.
