Istanbul ): Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has criticized US President Donald Trump, saying Trump has the right to govern the United States but not to rule over other nations. In an interview with CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour, Lula said, “President Trump was elected president of the United States. He has the right to govern, but not the right to govern other countries.” He stressed that the US must respect the sovereignty of other nations.
The Brazilian president criticized Trump’s unilateral approach to global affairs, calling for strengthening multilateralism to resolve international disputes. He said Trump’s style of governance was based on the idea that the most powerful country can impose its will on others — a notion he rejects. Lula also demanded that the US refrain from interfering in Brazil’s 2026 presidential elections, adding that while Brazil seeks dialogue with the US, it will not accept external pressure. The Brazilian president arrived in New York on Sunday to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
