PM Shehbaz Sharif Meets Iranian President Pezeshkian in New York, Discusses Bilateral Ties and Regional Situation

New York — Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also attended the meeting, along with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, and senior officials from both countries.
During the meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed the close and longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Iran, emphasizing the need to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across all areas of mutual interest. They also discussed the evolving regional situation.
PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep concern over the prolonged conflict in the region, stressing the need for restraint, de-escalation and sustained diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace and stability. He underlined the importance of continuing to implement the understanding reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to play a sincere and constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability.
President Pezeshkian commended Pakistan’s principled diplomacy on Iran and its shared efforts for regional peace and security. He emphasized the enduring strength of Pakistan-Iran relations, rooted in shared history, culture and religious ties, and reaffirmed Iran’s strong desire to further enhance multifaceted cooperation across various sectors.
Both sides underscored the importance of maintaining regular consultation and close contact to address current challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities. The two countries agreed to work together to promote regional peace, security and prosperity.
