TOKYO, Central Tokyo saw rain for the 34th consecutive day on Tuesday, the longest streak since records began, Japan’s weather agency said, according to Kyodo News. The Japanese capital has had rain every day since Aug 27.
The previous record of 33 consecutive days was set between June 27 and July 29, 2019. Approaching typhoons, a stalled autumn rain front and a low-pressure area contributed to the prolonged spell.
The heaviest rainfall of the current streak came on Sept 21, with 156 mm recorded. Cumulative rainfall in central Tokyo reached 629 mm (24.8 inches) by Monday, roughly three times the average for the whole month of September. Heavy rain also fell across large parts of eastern and western Japan on Tuesday, with over 30 mm recorded in one hour in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, early in the morning.
Rain is forecast to continue across most of eastern Japan until around Thursday, partly due to the lingering autumn rain front.
