A 30-year-old Myanmar national, Ye Lin, was charged on September 29 in Singapore with communicating a false message and obstructing justice after sharing an AI-generated crocodile image that led authorities to suspend water activities at Pandan Reservoir. Combined, the charges could bring up to 10 years in prison.
According to the charge sheet, Lin sent the image to an associate, Min Min Oo, on August 20. That afternoon, national water agency PUB received a report of a crocodile sighting accompanied by the image. Believing it showed an estuarine crocodile, a species found in Singapore’s waters, authorities halted water activities for two days while PUB and the National Parks Board searched the area and put up warning signs. It remains unclear how the image reached PUB.
On August 21, PUB confirmed the image was fake and filed a police report, and activities resumed the next day. Police said Lin created the image with AI and deleted it, along with his Gemini app history, on August 21. That deletion forms the basis of the obstruction charge. Citing the waste of public resources, police said they would not hesitate to act against anyone spreading falsehoods.
Lin faces up to three years in jail and a fine of up to S$10,000 for the false message, and up to seven years for obstruction of justice. Through an interpreter, he told the court he intends to plead guilty without a lawyer. He was released on S$5,000 bail, and his next court appearance is November 10. TechRadar noted that Gemini-generated images typically carry an invisible watermark, though it is unclear whether it was removed or checked in this case.
