TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of desperately trying to save himself, like a failed gambler, at the cost of more bloodshed and American money.
In a post on the US social media platform X, Araghchi called Netanyahu a “wanted war criminal with hands stained with Arab, American and Iranian blood.” He wrote: “Like a failed gambler, he is desperately trying to save himself with more American blood and treasure. Even American senators want out of this cycle.”
On February 28, the US and Israel launched a war on Iran in which, according to Tehran, more than 3,000 people were killed. Iran retaliated, and a number of Americans and Israelis were killed before a ceasefire in April. Despite a memorandum of understanding signed in mid-June, the US later struck more Iranian sites amid a stalemate in talks between Washington and Tehran.
In response to the US strikes, Iran targeted US military bases in Gulf states and Israel directly with missiles and drones. It also fully closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil passes, a move that proved key in pressuring Washington. However, talks remain deadlocked amid disagreements over navigation through the strait.
