US media reported on Monday that tech billionaire Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has contributed more than $276 million to organisations promoting the campaigns of right-wing American candidates ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. According to The New York Times, the amount given since July makes Musk the largest single donor in the November 3 elections. He has spent a total of $366 million in this election cycle.
The largest recipient of the funding is the Republican Senate Leadership Fund, which received $158 million. The fund aims to help the Republican Party maintain control of the Senate, although it holds only a narrow majority.
Musk also donated more than $76 million to his America PAC during the summer, which is running a major voter-turnout operation in competitive Senate and House races. Other recipients of his political donations include $20 million to the Republican Congressional Leadership Fund, $10 million each to the Republican Governors Association and Lone Star Liberty PAC, and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.
It may be recalled that the owner of SpaceX and Tesla is no stranger to large-scale spending in US elections. In 2024, he contributed $290 million to help President Donald Trump win re-election.
Trump allowed Musk to oversee his cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative at the White House for several months, but Musk stepped away from the role following a public dispute with the president. However, the two have since reconciled, and Trump awarded Musk the National Medal of Science at a ceremony in Washington, DC, last week.
