Dubai: UAE authorities have warned social media users that insulting someone online, defaming them or making allegations that damage their reputation can lead to imprisonment and fines of up to Dh500,000.
The warning was issued under the nationwide “The UAE Is Safe with Your Digital Awareness” campaign, launched by the Ministry of Interior in cooperation with Dubai Police and the Dubai Electronic Security Centre during Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
Authorities cited Article 43 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes. Under the provision, anyone who insults another person online or attributes an incident that could expose them to punishment or public contempt may face imprisonment and a fine of between Dh250,000 and Dh500,000, or either penalty.
The law provides for harsher punishment if the offence targets a public official or a person performing a public service in connection with their official duties.
The campaign urged users to avoid personal attacks, mockery, offensive language and unverified allegations on social media. Officials stressed that comments published online can also become the basis for legal action, and users should consider the consequences before posting or sharing content
