WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said Venezuela could soon become America’s 51st state, arguing it would make the country prosperous.
Speaking at a campaign rally at the Port of Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday, Trump said Venezuela would become a prosperous country and, “who knows,” might soon be America’s prosperous 51st state. “Let’s make it the 51st state,” he said, adding that it would then elect governors instead of presidents.
Pointing to a nearby ship, he said it carried one million barrels of oil from Venezuela and called it the biggest oil success in US history. He claimed that, following success in the recent conflict, the oil was being delivered at no cost to American taxpayers. Hours earlier, speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, he said the US had successfully taken control of Venezuela and that the oil had been sent as a gift.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was at the rally, said it was an honour to work for the greatest country in the world. Trump joked that Rubio could be dropped into Cuba and would sort things out there in about 15 minutes. Referring to the war with Iran, Trump said the US did not start it.
