In Whose Name?, a new documentary from first time filmmaker Nico Ballesteros about the life and tumultuous times of Kanye âYeâ West, features appearances by one huge name after another.
Itâs an A-list parade as BeyoncĂŠ, Jay Z, Lady Gaga, LeBron James, Rihanna, Chris Rock, Drake, ex-wife Kim Kardashian and Diddy all have cameos, and they pop up just in the first few minutes of a section that recaps some high points of Westâs chart-topping career. Later, everyone from Donald Trump and Kris Jenner to Pharrell Williams and Scooter Braun flash up on the big screen. While all will surely inspire chatter when the film comes out on Sept. 19, one that definitely will have tongues wagging is Elon Musk.
In an exclusive clip from In Whose Name? obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, the billionaire mogul is captured on camera after attending one of Westâs live shows in Miami. The two hang out in what appears to be a backstage area and chat it up in a conversation that finds Musk complimenting West on the production before revealing relationship woes in an intimate and candid moment.
âWow, yeah, thanks for inviting me, this was an amazing experience. A rare experience,â praises Musk as West nods his head and says that it was. âI didnât know what to expect, this was an amazing production.â
The clip then flashes to a new scene as Musk and West enter a door leading to a space that West describes as âan idea of a bedroom.â The circular room is an almost grayish white color with a high ceiling and a mattress-like cushion covering the entire floor. The two men then lie down next to each other and stare at the ceiling. Musk then takes it as an opportunity to ask West about his love life.
âSo are you and Kim like off and on or something? Or, I donât know, itâs hard to tell.â He then laughs and West doesnât answer the question. In the next shot, the two are standing in the room as Musk gets personal to reveal the complexities of his relationship status with onetime girlfriend and mother of his three children, Grimes, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher.
âClaire and I, Grimes,â Musk says, âWeâre sort of ⌠you know, in the same text stream, sheâs like, âI love you.â And then, like, you know, a day later, like, âI hate you.ââ Musk then laughs and looks to West who asks, âAnd what do you do?â Musk just says heâs like, âWhoa, OK. Yeah, exactly.â An awkward silence follows. West is nearly speechless but offers, âI donât have answers. Answers to everything except for that.â

The next shot shows West surrounded by an entourage that includes a woman he was regularly seen with, Chaney Jones, who was notable in how she was often referred to as a Kardashian look-a-like because she mimicked the latterâs style. Musk stands alone and then waves to the group as they exit.
In Whose Name? comes from Ballesteros who started shadowing the artist also known as Ye at 18, and continued for six years. In all, he compiled more than 3,000 hours of footage during some of Westâs most tumultuous times as he struggled with mental health issues and a bipolar diagnosis, the breakdown of his marriage to Kardashian, the crumbling of lucrative endorsement deals and a series of controversies over hate-filled public statements promoting antisemitic views, conspiracy theories and personal attacks on other artists and celebrities.
Per the filmâs official synopsis: âWhat began as silent observation evolved into a profound journey of artistic and personal growth. Immersed in Yeâs world of extremes, he bore witness to brilliance and breakdowns, triumphs and turmoil; but also observed the paranoia and intensity that increasingly shaped Yeâs world. In the end, Ballesteros captured not just a portrait of Ye, but a reflection of the human condition in all its contradictions.â
