LAHORE — Punjab Police have intensified their crackdown against criminal elements in Layyah district, seizing a substantial cache of illegal arms and arresting nearly 200 suspects, officials said on Monday.
The operations, launched on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Inspector General of Police Dr. Usman Anwar, were carried out under the supervision of District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Ali Waseem.
According to the DPO, police arrested 196 suspects in possession of illegal weapons. The seizures included 167 pistols and revolvers, 20 Kalashnikovs and rifles, as well as more than 450 rounds of ammunition and magazines. Authorities said the weapons could have been used in major criminal activities.
DPO Waseem said the crackdown has contributed to strengthening “an atmosphere of peace and tranquility” in the district. He stressed that ensuring a safe and secure environment for citizens remains the top priority of Layyah Police.
“There is no place for lawbreakers in Layyah. It is our duty to bring such elements to justice, and operations against criminals will continue without discrimination,” Waseem added.
Police officials maintain that the ongoing campaign is part of broader efforts to restore public confidence and ensure that residents can carry on their daily lives without fear.
