Trump Criticizes New York Governor for Supporting Zohran Mamdani, Threatens to Withhold Federal Funds

NEW YORK,— U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed “shock” at New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s public support for State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani, warning that the move could harm New York City and even result in the suspension of federal funding.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said Hochul’s decision was “shocking” and “deeply damaging,” adding that it sent the wrong message at a critical political moment. He warned that the federal government “would not stand by” if state leadership continued, in his words, to “endorse divisive and radical figures.”

Governor Hochul, however, defended her stance, insisting that Mamdani represented the democratic choice of his constituents and that her support was based on “principles of representation and inclusivity.”

The dispute has added fresh tension between the White House and New York’s Democratic leadership, raising concerns over whether Trump will follow through on his threat to cut federal resources — a move analysts say could have serious consequences for New York City’s budget and public services.
