Tubi, Fox Corp.’s free streaming outlet, will stream the Thanksgiving game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers through a partnership with Fox Sports. The Thanksgiving matchup will be the second NFL game to live stream on Tubi, following Super Bowl LIX in February. (Fox’s SVOD service, Fox One, will also carry the game.)
The Super Bowl collaboration was a successful one: Tubi’s stream of the game averaged some 13.6 million viewers, the largest streaming audience to date for a Super Bowl and more than 10 percent of the game’s record-breaking total viewership of 127.7 million.
Unlike some other subscription-based streamers owned by the NFL’s broadcast partners (NBCUniversal’s Peacock, Paramount+ and Fox One), Tubi doesn’t regularly carry live games from Fox Sports. It’s also the only AVOD service so far to carry an NFL game, but as the Super Bowl returns showed, the low barrier to entry for Tubi likely helped draw viewers in.
While a full package of sports rights doesn’t make economic sense for a free streamer like Tubi, the outlet’s chief marketing officer, Nicole Parlapiano, told The Hollywood Reporter after the Super Bowl that Tubi would look to offer some more sports programming: “Our strategy is much more where sports meets culture, and I would argue that Super Bowl is not just a sporting event, it’s a cultural event,” she said. “So it felt right for the Tubi viewer, because they are much more entertainment focused.”
