Hong Kong’s weather forecaster will issue the No 3 typhoon warning signal at 12.20pm on Saturday as Severe Tropical Storm Matmo moves closer to the city.
Education authorities also announced that kindergartens and schools for children with physical and intellectual disabilities will be suspended after noon.
“In the past few hours, Matmo moved steadily across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea. With Matmo edging closer, local winds will strengthen gradually later [on Saturday],” the Hong Kong Observatory said.
It added that the city’s weather would be cloudy, with a few squally showers and thunderstorms expected later in the day.
According to the forecast, Matmo is expected to intensify progressively and edge closer to the vicinity of the Leizhou Peninsula.
